LOGAN

AGAIN

It’s funny how something as wild as a fake relationship can reenergize a person. When I got home from the bar last night, sleep simply wasn’t an option. I ended up stripping off my clothes, throwing in a load, and watching that old Tupac flick, Poetic Justice, until I nodded off.

But I’m up again. Edible Arrangement ordered. A couple-thousand words on my book written. Clothes dry.

“All right, let’s just get this over with…” I tell myself as I slip my phone out of my sweats pocket and tap on Del’s name. Then I put it on speakerphone, set it on the top of the dryer, and get to folding.

“Hello?” Del’s voice is stilted with stubbornness. She knows damn right she tattled to Mom, but it’s cool. I chalk it up to wedding stress so we can get past this.

I pull out a navy T-shirt from the dryer and survey it for a sec. It’s got tiny, tattered white papers stuck to it. At first, I assume it’s from something leftover in the dryer or a strange variety of lint. But then I pull out a couple of pairs of sweats and jeans, and it’s the same.

“Hello? Logan?”

“Uh, hey, Del. It’s me.”

She sighs impatiently. “Yeah, hence my saying, ‘Logan.’”

Still confused, I set the clothes on top of the dryer and pick up the phone. I’ll survey the full extent of the damage later.

“Yeah, sorry…” I scrape my nails over my chin scruff. “I’m doing laundry, and there’s something all over my clothes, but anyway. I’m calling to apologize to you about last weekend. I know you care about me and want me to have a great time at the wedding with someone. I’m sorry I didn’t just thank you and leave it at that.”

“So, it had nothing to do with Gemma Holliday?”

Stressed about the wedding…just go with it.

“Actually, that’s the other thing I’m calling about.” Shit. “If it’s not too late, I’d like to give you my verbal RSVP. I’m bringing Gemma as my date.”

Rustling fills the line before she responds in a loud and high-pitched voice. “Holy shit! You called to invite her to the wedding?”

“Not exactly.”

“Spill,” she demands.

I release a weighted sigh. It’s going to come out sooner or later. “We ran into each other last Saturday before brunch.”

“I will literally die if you tell me she’s the neighbor you mentioned.”

For my sanity and my future self, I choose self-care and tell her everything…almost. I tell her about the kiss, minus the making Armando jealous part, and the photoshoot turned photo op, leaving out the part when we stared longingly into each other’s eyes before a captive audience and the hands-free orgasm at the bar. Instead, I stick to the script Gemma and I agreed upon last night, really laying it on heavy about “reconnecting.”

“Logan…” Del’s speechless, eating it up.

Had I known all it took to get her off my case is a fake relationship, I might’ve conjured up a girlfriend sooner.

“Listen, it’s new, so don’t go getting your hopes up.
